The grant program will also include opportunities to enhance and grow the existing community of curators with expertise in Latinx art, connecting the individuals supported at each participating institution to each other and to a wider circle of museum professionals working in this space. Funding will support the hiring of five new curators and the promotion of five curatorial staff into permanent roles at institutions across the United States and Puerto Rico. ALAM is a collaborative initiative that aims to bolster museums and visual art organizations that have shown a commitment to collecting, studying, exhibiting, and engaging with Latinx art and artists by ensuring they have the capacity to employ specialist curators. Latinx artists-creatives of Latin American or Caribbean descent who live and work in the U.S.-have made significant and vital contributions to American culture for generations. Throughout the years, we’ve presented greats like Angélica Aragón, Vikki Carr, Ana Castillo, Sandra Cisneros, Maria Hinojosa, and Julieta Venegas.Īfter a long two-year break, the festival is back and promises to be better than ever with a jampacked lineup of live musical performances, book readings, and more- all in celebration of the rich artistic accomplishments of Mexican women from both sides of the border.
Since 1994, the festival continues to be the only one of its kind with such a unique scope and focus. The Sor Juana Festival is a multidisciplinary festival that honors one of Mexico’s greatest writers, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, a 17th-century Mexican nun and celebrated playwright, mathematician and poet, who is considered to be the first feminist of the Americas.
